Webskills workshop
December 20th, 2007We moved to Knysna from Bangkok after the arrival of our first child. The Garden Route is without question one of those rare and special places and its a unique privilege to be a witness to the diversity and rich natural beauty in the area. However its going to be a very different place in twenty years time and for better or worse we want our family to be part of those changes. We want them to have the opportunity to grow up understanding something about a world that is disappearing around us.
I work with the internet so relocating was easy. It fascinates me. Its powerful and I have never forgotten a documentary featuring an experiment which was conducted in the slums of New Delhi, where a work station was cemented into a Hole in the wall. The cursor was controlled by a heavy duty joy stick and it took those street children precisely six minutes from the first time they saw a computer to where they were surfing the Web. Then, even more exciting, they started mentoring one another and when I look around Knysna and particularly at the shanty towns spilling over the hills, I wonder why are we not doing more?
